Deer-vehicle collisions

This article concerns the problem of vehicles colliding with deer or other large animals in the UK, and measures taken in some areas to reduce the number of such collisions. Accidents involve high costs in terms of human and animal injuries and of vehicle damage and insurance payments. Devices designed to minimise collisions include high fencing and deer crossing facilities; optical wildlife warning reflectors; and car-mounted ultrasound whistles. However, the most effective measures have been those incorporating optical flashes and acoustic signals and two of these are described: trials have been taking place in south-east England to evaluate their effectiveness. Interactive signs, triggered by the presence of deer or by excessive vehicle speed, are also being tested. The best results are likely to be achieved by integration of several complementary approaches. (A)
