REPORT OF DECK FOAM FIRE EXTINGUISHING TEST ABOARD M/V RHODE ISLAND
An extensive series of full-scale flammable liquid fire extinguishing tests were conducted on the deck of the tanker M/V Rhode Island at the U.S. Coast Guard Shipboard Fire and Safety Testing Facility, Mobile, Alabama. These tests evaluated the effectiveness of deck foam fire extinguishing systems in combatting flammable liquid fires, such as those fires which might result from spillage of flammable liquid cargoes on a tanker deck. The tests were designed to measure the influence of fire size and foam application rate using foam systems typically installed aboard modern tank ships. Additionally, the effectiveness of several newer types of foam concentrate was compared to the effectiveness of the standard protein foam concentrates most often used. A number of practical design considerations, not previously appreciated, were disclosed by the tests.(Author)
