Climate change uncertainty and the state highway network: a moving target

Climate change could impact adversely on planning, constructing and maintaining the state highway network. Transit New Zealand has assessed the potential climate change impacts on state highways and developed a response based on available information. Transit used a two-stage screening process to determine the necessity and feasibility of taking action now to protect infrastructure from future potential impacts of climate change. Stage one assessed the necessity of acting now.The assessment revealed that current policy and practice may not be sufficient to adequately protect bridges (and culverts with a design life of over 25 years) from the potential impacts of climate change. Stage two assessed the feasibility of acting now to protect state highway bridges from future potential climate change impacts. Uncertainty associated with climate change predictions and difficulties in assessing future economic costs were major constraints on developing Transits position on climate change impacts on the state highway network.(a) For the covering entry of this conference, please see ITRD abstract no.
