THE EFFECT OF TRAFFIC SIGNALS ON ROAD ACCIDENTS - WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE INTRODUCTION OF A BLINKING GREEN PHASE
The effect of the signalisation of intersections on road safety has been evaluated. One detail of signal control, the introduction of a 2 to 3-second blinking green phase at the end of the green period has been especially studied. The effect of signalisation on traffic flow has not been investigated. The paper presents the data on which the study is based, discusses methodological problems encountered in before-and-after studies of safety improvements, presents the evaluation of the signalised intersections studied and deals with the safety effects of a special blinking green phase. /Author/TRRL/
