DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION OF AN ICE MODEL BASIN

In recent years there has been great interest in the Arctic region. The discovery of large deposits of oil and other natural resources coupled with the uncertainty of supply from other sources of these materials has led to this interest. Large sums of money have been spent to solve the problems of exploratory development and transportation of these natural resources. The designer facing these problems requires as many design aids as are available. This paper is concerned with just one of these design aids. The ARCTEC Ice Model Basin is a simulated Arctic environment for the testing of devices required to operate in the Arctic environment. Within this facility an ice sheet is grown on the surface of a body of water and models of ships or marine structures are tested. The authors will review the design, construction, and present operations of this ice model basin. The cryogenic refrigeration system is also described.
