A Designer's View of Fly Ash Concrete: A Summary of Benefits and Precautions

The use of fly ash in concrete may be both property enhancing and environmentally beneficial. The author presents a primer for the new engineer on substituting fly ash for a portion of portland cement in concrete mixtures. The article includes sections on plastic and hardened concrete properties in both typical and high volume fly ash (HVFA) concrete, and addresses challenges in using fly ash in concrete, including variable quality, slower early age curing rates, and prescriptive specifications.
