E-Transport: Smart Solutions for New World Economies
This article discusses technological developments in Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), as presented at the 3rd South African Society for ITS (SASITS) International Conference and Exhibition, held at the Cape Town International Conference Centre, South Africa, 10 - 13 May 2005. The conference focused on the benefits of ITS in countries having so-called 'New World Economies.' These are countries experiencing socioeconomic transition that include transportation challenges such as fast-growing populations, urbanization, and the need to expand transportation infrastructure. Besides addressing ITS challenges in New World Economies, other special interest areas during the conference included: Safety (road and transport safety, along with vehicle-related crime), Public transport, Congestion management, and plans for ITS deployment at the 2010 World Cup soccer competition.
