THE INFLUENCE OF DESIGN AND RUNNING CHARACTERISTICS ON THE NOISE EMISSION OF INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES
DER EINFLUSS KONSTRUKTIVER UND BETRIEBSTECHNISCHEN KENNGROESSEN AUF DIE GERAEUSCHEMISSION VON VERBRENNUNGSMOTOREN
The results of noise tests on 51 different otto and diesel engines from home and abroad were evaluated. The sound output level is not suitable for comparing different engines. The main characteristic determining sound emission was found to be the nominal power output. Other characteristics are not significant. An acoustic efficiency factor was derived which permits comparison of different engines. The method of combustion and type of cycle do not influence noise emission. Liquid cooled engines have a smaller advantage concerning noise levels compared to air cooled engines. Improvement in the noise level of about 4 db(a) in the case of diesel engines could be obtained with forced induction. Investigation of dependence on running speed and power output showed that running speed is a decisive influence for the noise emission of the engine. Reducing the running speed by half resulted in a mean drop in noise level of 9 db(a) for diesel engines and 15 db(a) in the case of otto engines. The influence of the load on noise levels is small. Improvements in noise emission levels are obtainable in the main by reducing the running speed. /TRRL/
