Saturation Flow Rate Study at Signalized Intersections in Panama

The results of a saturation flow study for 25 through lanes at signalized intersections in Panama City, Republic of Panama are presented. Being this the first study of this type in Panama, only intersections with variations in lane width and percentage of heavy vehicles were considered. The rest of the factors which can affect the driver’s behavior are considered to be under ideal conditions. Saturation headways from field measurements in Panama City are less that the saturation headways obtained by the HCM 2000 estimation. Saturation flow rates for Panama City conditions are greater that the obtained using the HCM 2000 estimates. Based in the results from field data, adjustments factors for heavy vehicles and lane widths were obtained for each site studied. In addition, the adjustments factors for heavy vehicles and lane width vary for each case, suggesting a relationship between the effect of heavy vehicles and lane width over the saturation flow rate. The hypothesis that there is an interaction effect between heavy vehicles and lane width over the saturation flow rate in Panama City is accepted. These results will set the base to more field studies in signalized intersections in Panama City.
