Investigation of Prime Coat Effectiveness in Surface Treatments Constructed on Base
This paper presents the findings from an experimental study of the effectiveness of prime coats typically applied on flexible granular base materials used in Texas highways. In typical Texas surface treatment applications, the prime coat is applied on a finished base and it is expected to act as a intermediary between asphalt surface treatment and base. The prime coat effectiveness is influenced by the base material, base surface finish and moisture content in the base layer during prime coat infiltration. An experimental program was designed to quantitatively assess the influence of the above-mentioned factors on prime coat effectiveness. In the first phase of the experimental plan, the drying characteristics of the base material were investigated by drying a laboratory prepared base material specimen under controlled conditions in an environment room. In the second phase, the prime coat effectives was measured for crushed limestone base with four prime coat binders, two base finished techniques, and four base moisture contents when the prime coat is applied. For the combinations indicated above, the prime penetration, pullout strength of the prime and the flexural strength of primed base were measured. Results indicated that depth of prime coat binder infiltration into the base is affected by the base moisture content and the type of surface finish of the base. This study provides an overall assessment of various base–prime coat binder combinations, and the suitable moisture content in the base to spray the binder.
