Short- and Long-Term Design Considerations for Compacted Fly Ash in Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Applications
Fly ash is generated in very large quantity worldwide. Previous studies have shown beneficial utilization of the material in high volume geotechnical and geoenvironmental infrastructures. However, more than 70% of total volume of fly ash produced is still being disposed in landfill as waste because very limited data is available on long-term field performance of the material. Series of experimental studies including triaxial tests have been performed to investigate its strength parameters for design purpose and evolution of the geotechnical engineering properties with age. The results indicate formation of clay minerals from the ash materials as it ages. The material is also observed to contain finer and less crushable particles with age. The formation of clay minerals and finer particles may be beneficial or not depending on the application. Recommendations are made on strength parameters for design purpose.
