Successful Applications of Recycled Aggregates: An Industry Perspective and Case Study
Nearly everywhere virgin aggregates are used, recycled aggregates can be used. Innovative engineering and design combined with strategic marketing allows recycled aggregates to successfully compete in the aggregate marketplace. Diligence and attention to quality control and specification standards are vital to the recycled aggregate’s market success and reputation. The increasing incorporation of sustainability goals within the last five years, into construction and transportation projects, has inspired greater use of recycled aggregates. However, many engineers and consulting engineering companies are still unaware of the numerous applications that recycled aggregates have. This paper will provide an overview of the recycling process, define and explain the importance of Application Engineering to recycle projects, and detail proven applications of recycled aggregates. Material test data will be presented from a completed transportation project.
