Effect Analysis on Parameters of Route Travel Time Detection Method Using Network-based Wireless Location Technologies

This paper presents a parameter analysis for route travel time detection using Network-based Wireless Location Technologies (WLT). Different from early generation traffic detection approaches based on WLT which rely on wireless signals and the assistance of Global Position System (GPS) to generate location information, the method evaluated in this paper generate vehicle locations by tracking the wireless signal transitions at fixed points on roadway links. In this paper, these fixed points are defined as “wireless transition points”. Wireless transition points can either be calculated according to the characteristics of wireless signals or be measured by road test. A lot of location sensitive wireless signals such as Cell ID, Timing Advance (TA), Location Update (LU) in Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM), Route Trip Time (RTT) in Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) can be used to generate the wireless transition points. In this paper, Cell ID and TA are used to generate wireless transition points. Parameter effect analysis in this paper is based on micro-simulation model CORSIM. Simulation area is the urban area of the city of Madison, Wisconsin. Highway traffic volume data collected by Wisconsin Department of Transportation are used as volume input. Loop detector data on freeway are used for calibration and result evaluation. A hypothetical base station plan is generated to simulate the wireless network in this area. Two model parameters: location variance of transition point and average on-call time are evaluated in this paper. The simulation result indicates that: 1) location variance has larger impact on long routes than short routes regardless of road functional classes; 2) freeways are less sensitive to the average on-call time than arterials.
