Impact of Coordination Parameters on Pedestrian Operations in NEMA Controllers

Pedestrian service can be influenced by a number of parameters in signal controllers. Typically a traffic engineer’s challenge is to operate the intersection more efficiently by increasing the throughput of vehicles and/or by improving progression. Traffic engineers try to use all available tools to improve the signal operations. However, some of the options available to improve operations for vehicles can significantly influence the pedestrian operations. Researchers used Hardware-in-the-loop simulation to evaluate these coordination features and their impact on pedestrian operations. This paper documented the findings of research conducted to evaluate the coordination features in NEMA controllers for the Texas Department of Transportation. Specifically this paper documented the findings of the research study related to the impact of the coordination features on pedestrian service. The study considered coordination features in Eagle and Naztec traffic signal controllers. The paper recommended the coordination modes to be selected when using an Eagle controller for high and low pedestrian volume locations. The paper also recommended the coordination features to be used when using a Naztec controller for such locations. Having knowledge of the functionality of these controllers will allow practitioners to better operate coordinated signalized intersections.
