Development of Integrated Design Model for Transit Network
Traffic congestion is reduced by optimal transit network design. Previous research focuses on single mode transit network design. It therefore cannot take various transit modes and their interactions into consideration. The objective of this research is to develop an integrated transit network design model which minimizes generalized cost considering various transit modes. A bi-level programming model was formulated for the integrated design model in this research. The upper-level problem consists of two main components: a route generation algorithm and a transit route design model. In the route generation procedure, we generate candidate route sets for rail and bus. In the transit route design model an optimal set of routes is selected and, using a genetic algorithm, the respective route frequencies are determined simultaneously. In the lower-level problem, network analysis procedure is explained. The network performance measures are computed through transit assignment and the transit modes of route are determined by route characteristics. The transit assignment model in our model is based on the concept of "optimal strategies". The improved transit assignment model is able to find optimal strategies satisfying the constraint of a maximum number of transfers. To investigate the performance of our model and compare it with other models, we applied it to Mandl's network. Compared with previous work, our model performed well in terms of number of routes, travel time, and fleet size. The results obtained from the application to a real transit network in the Kangnamgu district of Seoul, Korea showed discernable improvements over the present network.
