A Summary of the Oregon TLUMIP Model Microsimulation Modules

In Oregon a Transportation Land Use Model Improvement Program was begun in the late 1990s, to provide the Oregon Department of Transportation better information for statewide policy decisions involving the nexus of transportation, land use, and economics issues. This paper discusses the status of the program as well as the models developed and planned, with particular emphasis on the microsimulation elements in the most recent modeling work. This includes the proof-of-concept Oregon1 statewide model built on the TRANUS framework and used in multiple policy applications, the much more ambitious Oregon2 model which includes both spatial (household, land use) and transport (freight, person) microsimulations, and the soon to be complete Oregon2TM (transitional model). The challenges posed by the more advanced microsimulation techniques, including alternative approaches taken and planned are reviewed. The microsimulation models are assessed in the context of a program that necessitates the use the models in a timely manner for policy applications.
