Evaluating Laboratory Modulus and Rutting of Asphalt Concrete
This study evaluates the repeatability and factors associated with asphalt modulus and rutting determined in the laboratory. Dynamic modulus test of asphalt concrete were conducted following the ASTM D 3497 procedure. Mix rut potential is determined using an asphalt pavement analyzer (APA) in the laboratory. Results from ten plant produced and two laboratory mixes show that the modulus value varies with the test operator and number of samples. The APA rut test does not vary with the test operator and number of samples in this study. Based on the data produced in this study, the effects of mix properties such as binder grade, asphalt content, aggregate gradation, air voids, temperature on modulus and rut values are examined. The effects of binder grade and air voids on modulus are less than those of temperature and asphalt content on modulus. Among the mix parameters, binder performance grade (PG) affects rutting significantly. In addition, this study makes attempts to examine the correlation between modulus and rutting to justify the uses of easier test methods. It was shown that rutting is not related to modulus. The outcome of this study will be useful in implementing empirically based and mechanistic tests in the Superpave technology and pavement design.
