DynaCHINA: Specially-Built Real-Time Traffic Prediction System for China

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are transportation systems which apply emerging Information Technology (IT) to address and alleviate transportation congestion problems. ITS have the potential to improve traffic conditions and reduce travel delays. Several simulation-based dynamic traffic assignment (DTA) systems, including DynaMIT and DYNASMART, have been developed for a wide range of ITS applications. However, these systems cannot be deployed directly in China because of some local traffic characteristics, such as mixed traffic and unique driver behavior to China. This paper presents a new simulation-based DTA system: DynaCHINA (Dynamic Consistent Hybrid Information based on Network Assignment). Though the basic framework of DynaMIT is adopted in its implementation, compared with DynaMIT and DYNASMART, DynaCHINA has four unique features: modeling mixed traffic and special driver behavior; availability of floating car data (FCD) in urban networks; anisotropic mesoscopic supply simulator; availability of true OD flows in freeway networks. Predictive capacity is the core of DynaCHINA. DynaCHINA shows the potential for real time traffic prediction application according to the laboratory evaluation results with data collected from XJTUSIM, a microscopic traffic simulator developed at Xi¡¯an Jiaotong University (XJTU). It is the first and the only Traffic Estimation and Prediction System (TrEPS) in China. It is a potential candidate chosen to alleviate traffic congestion problems during the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Initial field deployments of DynaCHINA are being conducted at Beijing, Jinan and Guangzhou.
