Simulation of a Weaving Section
As part of NCHRP Project 3-75, Analysis of Freeway Weaving Sections, an effort to simulate a weaving section on I-80 East in Emeryville, California was conducted. The data was provided by the NGSIM (Next Generation Simulation) project, and was extremely detailed. This paper reports on the successful simulation effort, and on the use of the simulated section to produce estimates of capacity, and to investigate the sensitivity of weaving operations and capacity to the volume ratio (VR), the proportion of total traffic that is involved in weaving movements. It also explores potential implications of the results on the modeling of weaving section operations.
