DESIGN OF CUTS EXCAVATED IN ROCK: EXPERIMENTS ON THE BILBAO-BEHOBIA MOTORWAY
DIESENO DE DESMONTES EXCAVADOS EN ROCA; EXPERIENCIAS DE LA AUTOPISTA BILBAO-BEHOBIA
The methodology used for the design of slopes excavated in rock for the construction of a motorway, with cut heights of up to 80 M is presented. Data on the work and field conditions are given such as rock structure and character, top soil areas, surface hydrological conditions, etc. An explanation is given of a method for acquiring terrain structural data, modifying that put forward by KW John, in order to obtain a better assessment of the problem. The geological survey was co-ordinated with the borings and ditchings which had already been carried out. The fracturing condition is evaluated by taking the number of fractures for each 30 cm and the rqd for each operation. The degree of weathering is expressed by means of a five-point scale, derived from a classification devised for granites by D G Moye. The stability calculations were made almost entirely using the graphic method of Prof Klaus W John (1968), and the results compared with the actual behaviour of the structures. The author states that the predictions were correct more than 80 per cent of the time and failures were due to two causes: errors in the interpretation of the terrain and defects in the method of analysis. /TRRL/
