Junction-Strength Requirements for Roadway Design, Construction
This article focuses on clarifying disparities in junction strength requirements while using geogrids in base reinforcement and subgrade stabilization for roadway design and construction. Junction strength, which is measured by the amount of force required to pull a junction apart, is a key issue in determining the survival level of a particular roadway during construction. The article explains the following three points which are the correct approach for technical base junction strength: 1) correct design requirements for pertinent strain levels expected in the reinforcement; 2) keying construction requirements to the strength required for construction conditions; and, 3) ensuring the rib transverse of the load is challenged by its junction strength. The recommendations given suggest that conservative minimums of junction strength should be established and that junction strength should not be determined by design but from geogrids.
