Transport Links between Europe & Asia

This report describes how land links between Europe and Asia could offer a viable alternative to sea transport. The land links will substantially improve the accessibility of the countries they pass through and they can absorb a substantial portion of the growth in intercontinental traffic, particularly container traffic. However, the provision of efficient land links between Europe and Asia requires appropriate policy decisions on issues such as the development of adequate infrastructure and the removal of regulatory or institutional barriers that prevent the development of efficient transport services. At its 2005 session in Moscow, the European Conference of Ministers of Transport (ECMT’s) Council of Ministers recommended a series of actions that were aimed at developing a comprehensive approach for providing efficient inland transport links between Europe and Asia. This report features the recommendations approved by the Ministers and the “Report on Trends in Europe-Asia Trade and Consequences for Transport”, which serve as a reference for their discussions in Moscow. The report also includes the plan of action that was approved by the Ministers in order to facilitate intermodal transport between Europe and Asia.
