Interventions for Environmental Management of the Coastal Zone of Sri Lanka

This paper describes how the coastal problems of Sri Lanka have been recognized from the turn of the century. However, because of their serious aggravation, it was in the early seventies that growing attention was focused on these problems. When the initial response of seeking engineering solutions to control immediate coastal erosion problems proved to be non-effective it was realized that there was a need to adopt a coordinated approach to the problem within a wider coastal zone management framework. The need, combined with increased environmental awareness resulted in the acceptance of the requirement for some measures of the regulation of development activity within the coastal zone. The paper covers four broad areas of interest. First, it identifies the significance of the coastal zone of Sri Lanka and describes its present status of management. Second, it discusses the critical issues relating to actions and adopted measures. Third, it identifies the challenges and constraints and finally it focuses attention on the way forward in the light of lessoned learned.
