U.S. Traffic Congestion Getting Worse
According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the total number of vehicle miles traveled in 2005 reached close to 3 billion miles. This figure indicates an 8 percent increase over 2004, and almost 20 percent increase from 1995. Vehicle registration also reached record highs, with 241.2 million vehicles registered nationwide, and 6.2 million motorcycles. Under the auspices of the Urban Partnership Agreement, the U.S. Department of Transportation is providing state and local governments with grants, loans and technical assistance to test traffic reduction technologies. States and municipalities participating in the program are required to research, develop, and showcase strategies that prove the effectiveness of these traffic reduction technologies.
