Prevention of Cracks in Pavements: Achievements and Open Questions
In this paper, the author gives a general overview of the progress and open questions within the field of analysis of reflective cracking in pavement overlays all of which is ultimately designed for uses in strengthening, rehabilitation, and maintenance. The paper covers the following topics: cracking of such pavements in terms of causation, the assessment and evaluation of such cracks, construction measures used to mitigate cracking or to limit its severity, systems that are designed to resist overlay cracking including geosynthetics, interlay products for overlays, design and modeling of various overlay systems, and the practical implementation of overlays at the construction site itself. The author stresses that more work is needed to develop non-destructive evaluation methods, better design models, analysis of the top-down cracking phenomena, and relevant testing methods among them.
