Sea of change

A third bridge is being constructed over the Maqta Channel between the mainland and Abu Dhabi Island to relieve congestion. The bridge, characterised by asymmetric arch shapes, was designed by architect Zaha Hadid and is inspired by the shape of shifting sand dunes. The final design was in partnership with engineering firm High-Point Rendel. The bridge is being built by Archirodon. The bridge deck and substructure are constructed in concrete and the main parts of the arches are constructed in steel. During a design check by Cowi, all internal splices were changed to fully welded connections to ensure compliance with the US AASHTO 75% strength splice rule. The bridge is being built on large-diameter bored piles. Challenges to the contractor included the three-dimensional modelling for the preparation of the shop drawings for the concrete forming, reinforcement and post-tensioning detailing. The arches behave as bent box girders in a non-vertical plane. Arches, piles and temporary works were modelled in the Adina program. Details are given of the construction process, fabrication of the arches in Thailand and Dubai, erection of the steel structures, and the seismic protection requirements.
