THE IMPROVEMENT OF OLD CONCRETE SURFACES BY FLAME TREATMENT FOLLOWED BY THE APPLICATION OF A COATING
AUSBESSERUNG VON ALTBETONFLAECHEN DURCH FLAMMSTRAHLEN UND ANSCHLIESSENDE BESCHICHTUNG
Before applying a new coating to an old concrete surface the corroded layer must be carefully removed. The method normally adopted in West Germany involves flame treatment using oxyacetylene burners. The effects of flame treatment were investigated on a 30 year old concrete roadway slab which was to be extended. The induced temperature stresses leave the concrete unaffected. Various types of coating were tested. The bond between coating and flame-treated concrete was compared with that using sand-blasting. Microscopic inspection established that a faultless bond existed between the two surfaces. The tensile adhesive stress of the flame-treated samples was less than that of the sand-blasted samples. The number of load repetitions up to failure was less for the flame-treated bond sample than for the sand-blasted one. Epoxy-resin mortar proved to be a suitable type of coating. /TRRL/
