Optical solution
This article describes the use of an optical network to co-ordinate the traffic control and management requirements of the major roads in the state of New Jersey, USA. The network connects all the road facilities including operations centres, maintenance yards, and toll road exits, and supports the state's intelligent transport system initiative by providing real-time measurement of traffic speed, volume and road occupancy to assist incident detection and response. It supports the toll operations, and video and radio communications for highway staff, enabling efficient information transmission to partner agencies and motorists. Upgrading the network has resulted in cost savings and greater efficiency both of the system and of personnel. A statewide traffic operations centre is being developed which should further improve interoperability.
