Into the valley

This article describes the design and construction of the Rheola Bridge in Wales, UK. The road bridge crosses two rivers, a railway line and a main road, with no clear ground for intermediate piers. Cost savings for the entire road project dictated changes in design to the bowstring bridge, simplifying and lightening the structure. Composite decking is to be laid on transverse beams between the two longitudinal beams. The constrained environment meant that the bridge had to be built in situ: each arch was assembled from three pieces supported on temporary steel towers. The sections were delivered pre-painted, reducing the time taken for structure painting after completion.
