Germany's 'Central Station'
The new Berlin Hauptbahnhof (Berlin Central Station) in Germany, which opened in 2006, is described. The station will be a traffic hub for all long-distance trains that start in Berlin or which pass in the East-West or North-South directions through the city. It will also be connected to the Regionalbahn network (regional rail) and S-bahn network (urban rail). The North-South connection tracks lie 15 metres below ground level and the East-West connection tracks lie 10 metres above road level. The station is made of concrete, steel and glass and will be a new landmark for the Deutsche Bahn and Berlin. It was designed by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partner. The East-West roof has a curved form and two office buildings extend over the top of the roof. A glass roof, the North-South roof, was erected between the two arched structures. The station includes a selection of services, restaurants and shopping facilities.
