Driving hybrids
The different powertrain architectures of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) are considered. HEV architecture determines the possible mode of operation e.g. electric only, electric assist (hybrid drive), battery charging or regenerative braking. HEVs are divided into series hybrid and parallel hybrid. In a series hybrid, the final drive is delivered through a motor and no additional final drive torque is provided through a conventional mechanical arrangement. In a parallel hybrid, final drive torque is provided by both the electrical motor and a mechanical driveline. Micro hybrid, mild parallel, full parallel, series, combined hybrid and powersplit hybrid architectures are described. The advantages and disadvantages of each architecture are outlined and examples given. A design approach to help identify the most appropriate architecture for a particular application is presented.
