Undaunted by scale
This article looks at the current and potential use of telematics in car parking systems in the UK. Improving ease of payment is seen as the basic use of the technology. Transponder-based vehicle identification allows automatic entry and exit at a car park, with payment invoiced monthly. Registering for automatic payment then makes possible the sending of product and service information. Car park spaces, especially at airports, can be pre-booked and paid on the internet, or paid at the car park reception where additional services can be offered. Using mobile phone technology to deliver telematics-based services makes them available to a wide range of users. A problem of these services is lack of standardisation: technology bought from one supplier cannot usually be integrated with another supplier's system. Other information such as directional guidance could be used to reduce traffic congestion.
