CONSTRUCTION OF THE NEW TAKE-OFF AND LANDING RUNWAY AT ZUERICH AIRPORT
BAU DER NEUEN START- UND LANDEBAHN DES FLUGHAFENS ZUERICH MIT EINEM GLEITSCHALUNGSFERTIGER
On the airport Zuerich-Kloten, apart from taxiways and parking areas, a new take-off runway was constructed during the summer/autumn 1975 in concrete with slipformers for large aeroplanes with wheel loads of up to 45 t. The length is 3300 M, the width 60 M. The roadbase consists of cement stabilized soil of 55 to 75 cm thickness, depending on the bearing capacity of the sub-soil. The concrete pavement is 30 cm thick at the 30 M wide middle portion and decreases to 20 cm at the sides. It was constructed in 7.50 M wide strips with transverse joints at 7.50 M spacing without dowelling. The longitudinal joints are tongued and grooved. The concrete is composed of 32% sand 0/6 mm, 28% gravel 6/16 mm, 40% gravel 16/32 mm and 300 kg/m3 cement. A 0.5% plasticizer was added to the cement by weight and 1.8 per thousand lp material; water content 0.42 - 0.44. Each of the 2 mixing plants supplied material for 90 to 100 M3 finished concrete per minute. The construction was carried out with a Guntert & Zimmermann slipformer. The daily output is about 700 M for a width of 7.5 M. The transverse joints were cut. The construction corresponded to the Swiss specifications. Specifications for dowelling in force at the moment are against the utilization of slipforming equipment; after-curing, the restriction to single course construction and the small number of large sections are also drawbacks. /TRRL/
