SMALL BUS SYSTEM IMPROVES GRADUALLY AFTER GOING PUBLIC
Six buses inaugurated service for Monterey Peninsula Transit (MPT) September 26, 1973. The scope of service has grown dramatically under MPT administration and ridership gains have kept operating costs per mile relatively constant. In 1974, the operating cost per mile was $1.33, compared with $1.31 in 1977. The efficiency gained by a larger-scale operation was cited by officials as a major reason that this figure is slightly lower in the face of spiraling inflation. /GMRL/
