Traffic flow characteristics on passing lane road sections with median barrier. Main road 9 between Orivesi and Muurame

Keskikaiteellisten ohituskaistaosuuksien liikennevirran ominaisuudet. Valtatie 9 valilla Orivesi-Muurame

In this research work spot speeds and following were investigated by field measurements on passing lane road sections with a median barrier and at reference locations between them on ordinary two-lane road sections on main road 9. There were six measurement points altogether: 2+1 passing lane section in Orivesi and a reference location of it (after passing lane section), 2+2 passing lane section in Laengelmaeki and two reference locations of it (one before and one after the passing lane section), and 1+2 passing lane section in Muurame (no reference location). Data were gathered in winter, summer and autumn 2004 and in winter 2005. Data from one week with good road and weather conditions were chosen for further analysis from each measurement period. In the winter 2004 the speed limit on the investigated road sections was 80 km/h except in Muurame, where the limit was 100 km/h. During the other measurement periods the speed limit was 100 km/h in all measurement points. In Orivesi the average daily traffic (ADT) was about 5,700 veh/d and in Laengelmaeki about 5,200 veh/d in 2004. In Muurame ADT was clearly higher, about 9,800 veh/d. In the winter 2004 in all those measurement points where the wintertime speed limit was 80 km/h mean speeds in the daytime (06-22) were 4-8 km/h lower than in the winter 2005, when the speed limit was 100 km/h. In the night-time (22-06) the differences were a little smaller. The summer and autumn 2004 (speed limit 100 km/h) were quite the same in terms of their daytime mean speed level. In the winter 2005 the daytime mean speed was mostly a little lower than in the summer or autumn 2004. However, in places the mean speed was even higher in winter than in summer. In terms of passing lane speeds winter stood out more clearly. In the winter 2004 the mean speeds in the passing lane direction (basic lane + passing lane) on the passing lane sections in Orivesi and Laengelmaeki were 91-92 km/h in the daytime and 89-91 km/h in the night-time. During the other measurement periods mean speeds were 97-100 km/h in the daytime and 92-98 km/h in the night-time. On Muurame passing lane section where the speed limit was 100 km/h during all measurement periods, the mean speeds in the passing lane direction were 94-97 km/h in the daytime and 90-95 km/h in the night-time. On all passing lane sections the mean speeds on the passing lane were clearly higher than on the corresponding basic lane of the same direction both in the daytime and in the night-time. The difference between the basic lane and the passing lane was 11-18 km/h in the daytime and 4-20 km/h in the night-time depending on the measurement point. In Orivesi and in Längelmäki the daytime mean speeds in the passing lane direction were mostly higher than at the reference locations on the two-lane sections. However, the night-time mean speeds were lower on the passing lane sections than at the reference locations.
