RUMBLE SURFACES

The use of intermittent lengths of coarse textured road surfaces on which vehicle tyres produce a rumbling sound is described. They are intended to alert a driver to the need for caution and to guide him into adopting a suitable rate of deceleration. Suitable sites for rumble surfaces, such as rural roads where considerable reductions in speed are required, are indicated. Guidance is given on layout, which is determined by average maximum approach speed, desired terminal speed, alignment, gradient, sight distance and traffic conditions at the site. Construction is by spray and chip surface treatment, consisting of a tack coat of bitumen or bitumen emulsion and hard cubizal stone having a good resistance to polishing. Advice on construction and on evaluating the success of the installation is given. /TRRL/
