THE ROAD ACCIDENT SITUATION IN AUSTRALIA IN 1975

This report was presented to the Commonwealth Minister for Transport by the expert group on road safety. It reviews developments in all aspects of road safety in Australia up to 1975. Major recommendations concern implementing and evaluating alcohol countermeasures and establishing integrated statistical systems covering accidents, licence-holders and motor vehicles. Other recommendations include improvement of restraint devices for adult and child vehicle occupants, spot improvements at hazardous road locations. The development of town planning guidelines in relation to road safety, traffic management measures including reduced dependence on the give-way-to-the-right rule at intersections. It should be read in conjunction with the expert group's first report presented in 1972. (A) /TRRL/
