DOSIFICACION DE MEZCLAS BITUMINOSAS: II. LOS ARIDOS PARA MEZCLAS BITUMINOSAS. PROPIEDADES Y CRITERIOS DE CALIDAD. ENSAYOS DE CARACTERIZACION

This paper analyzes the characteristics of aggregates for bituminous mixtures. In these mixtures the aggregates constitute a little more than 95% of the weight of the mixture, the binder occupying the other 5%. The aggregate is found in the form of particles, varying in size, as fine aggregates, coarse aggregates and fillers. The distribution of sizes at the interior of the mixture is a question of pure chance and it is the compaction which distributes the individual particles. This study deals with coarse and fine aggregates, which should possess the following basic qualities to form a suitable bituminous mixture: (1) nature of aggregates, (2) resistance to impact and wear, (3) particle size distribution and its influence on internal friction and mechanical strength, (4) surface texture of particles, (5) resistance to atmospheric agents, (6) compactibility of aggreatges. This study was presented at a course on the proportioning of bituminous mixtures which took place at the Centre of Studies for Civil Engineering & Architecture at Madrid, from 1st-5th March, 1976. /TRRL/
