It's All About Height: Tunnel and Trackwork Along NS' Heartland Corridor Will Allow a Direct Route Between Chicago and Norfolk, Va., for Auto Racks and Double-Stack Freight Cars

This article discusses the opening of the Norfolk Southern (NS) railway's Heartland corridor for auto racks and double-stack freight cars, a project that will effectively shorten the trip from Hampton Roads to Chicago by 200 miles or about one day. Also, as the corridor can now be used for double stacks, the output for the line will be doubled upon its opening. This increased business will be a boon to local regions served on the journey. This is mainly due to the increasingly difficult time operators are having making single-stack trains operate cost effectively. Construction will begin for the corridor in the second quarter of 2007 and is hoped to be completed by 2009. A number of clearance-related issues will be solved for tunnels including further excavation by square notching, lowering the tracks, or raising the ceiling.
