SHEAR STRENGTH OF CONCRETE JOINTS UNDER DYNAMIC LOADS
Experimental methods to investigate the shear resistance of concrete joints to dynamic loading and the effects of repeated loading on the dynamic strengths of joints are described. Both reinforced and unreinforced joints were examined. The effect of repeated loadings of 55 and 66 per cent of the static strength on the dynamic shear strength was also studied. Details are given of the test specimens and the experimental method using an axial load to produce a shearing effect along the plane of the joint. Electrical load cells were placed at the top and bottom of the specimen. It was found that the dynamic shear strength of the joint could be some 80 per cent greater than the static strength. About 0.5 per cent reinforcement at the joint was essential to increase the impulse capacity. Repeated loading of less than 55 per cent of the static strength had no significant effect on the dynamic shear strength or the impulse capacity of the joint. A higher level of repeated loading could lower the strength and ductility of the joint. /TRRL/
