Building Safer Routes and Crosswalks to School
This article describes the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program, a federally-funded national initiative which provides funds to local efforts directed at improving street safety for children walking to school. It focuses on a crosswalk enhancement program in Huntington Park, California which involved the improvement of 24 intersections and 96 crosswalks. Improvements included making crosswalks more visible to both pedestrians and motorists, improving illumination, and eliminating bumps and protruding lips. An additional component of the program was the use of decorative impressed crosswalk lines which provided the needed visual acuity but also allowed for decorative features that could enhance city beautification efforts.
