Transport policy: take a lesson from London

Urban sprawl is spreading in most European cities. The International Association of Public Transport (UITP) has recommended that governments must increase investment in public transport to bring it up to the level for the road network, ensure higher speed and reliability for public transport, and give greater control to local government teams. The UITP's Mobility in Cities Database has examined the link between the market share of the different modes of transport, their cost and use of energy. This showed that cities that managed to increase their use of public transport have saved their residents money. Public transport use is influenced by population density, speed and regularity, and parking policies. UITP urges road space to be given to pedestrians, bikes, public transport vehicles and taxis. Access to town centres should be limited through congestion charging as in London or through regulatory measures as in Rome.
