Estacio Bascule Bridge, Spain

The Mar Menor ("minor sea") is an almost completely enclosed inner sea located in the South of Spain. Its surface area is 170 km2 and its coastline is 73km long. Its shallow, warm and calm waters make it very popular as a tourist resort. A narrow band of sand, called La Manga separates the Mar Menor from the Mediterranean Sea. The Mar Menor and the Mediterranean are connected through La Manga by the 33m wide Estacio Canal to allow boats moored in the Mar Menor to have access to the Mediterranean Sea. The bridge across the Estacio Canal is thus essential to La Manga since it is the only connection between its North and South segments; and the bridge has also to be moveable to allow boat traffic along the Estacio Canal. An old swing bridge had been in operation for many years but it was too narrow and it was heavily corroded; its rotation axis was supported on a massive concrete pier which was located in the canal thus making boat navigation more risky.Consequently, the Administration decide to build a new moveable bridge, better adapted to the present needs of the crossing.(A)
