A Good Move: An Underground Exhibit Space Constructed at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry Now Serves as the Home of the German Submarine U-505

In this article, the authors explain the new underground bunker-type housing of the WWII era captured German submarine U-505 as it is situated at the Chicago Museum of Science. The article provides a brief historical account of the vessel, which was captured near Africa in 1944 and was then studied prior to its move to the museum in 1954. The submarine required the new housing after Chicago's pollution and inclement weather was found to be damaging the metal. When other options of creating housing for the submarine were deemed aesthetically unsuitable, moving the ship underground, with a link to the museum, proved to be the best option. The article gives many technical specifications about the construction and design of the bunker, with work provided by a combination of private contractors and the Chicago Department of Transportation.
