THE PRODUCTS TANKER THROUGH THE 1970'S

World energy requirements are increasing. Most in demand are refined crude oil products for transportation and heating. The basic markets for these products are Western Europe, United States, Japan, Canada, other Western Hemisphere and other Eastern Hemisphere. Each produces and uses these products. But most using areas are large importers and refiners. Intra-area distribution has been made by a group of "clean product tankers." Environmental conditions in the U.S. Western Europe and Japan are forcing a change in the pattern of local refineries. This is changing the world's need for highly sophisticated, and unsophisticated clean product tankers. The economics of these tankers, as owned by industry, dependents and governments is examined and leads to the conclusion that a need will exist for unsophisticated tankers to supply clean products to the eastern United States.
