Reduction of Pantograph Noise
This article concerns the reduction in pantograph noise for the Shinkansen train in Japan using methods such as improvements in aerodynamics and developing a noise insulation plate. The elements of pantograph noise as listed include aerodynamic noise from the shape of the component, spark noise from contact loss, and sliding noise from the contact strips meeting the contact line. Two pantograph types were analyzed using an x-shaped microphone array, one with an arrow-shaped arm and one with a single arm. Insulation plates were also developed in order to reduce noise, with cross sectional shape optimization being a key factor to ensure the best results. Various lengths of these plates were tested, with results indicating that noise reduction effectiveness was optimized at about 10m. A multi-segment slider is also discussed.
