Underground Remains Vital to Singapore

This article describes the recently completed Circle Line in suburban Singapore specifically from the viewpoint of tunnel engineering. The entirely underground 33 km of tunnels were entirely drilled by tunnel boring machines (TBM) and used 29 open cut stations. The project was completed for US$97 million, and was privately contracted out by Singapore’s government. This was also the first time slurry tunneling was used in Singapore due to the tunnel’s many hard/soft rock interfaces. The slurry system used involved using disk cutters for the hard rock and picks for soft rock excavation, with an average operating pressure of about 4 bar. The stone crusher used was also somewhat distinctive as it is located on the outbound slurry line on a gantry of the back-up trailer (as opposed to being in the plenum at the slurry intake and outlet ports).
