Emergency Evacuation Report Card 2006
This report evaluates the initial evacuation capacity for 37 urban areas whose population exceeds 1,000,000 - the largest urban areas in the United States. It provides estimates of the comparative capacity of highways systems in two ways - (1) internal traffic circulation that enables the vehicles to reach their exits, and (2) exit capacity. It also presents information on evacuation planning for those households that do not have access to a vehicle. The report notes that 25 urban areas could have more difficulty evacuating during an emergency than New Orleans experienced during and after Hurricane Katrina.
