Benchmarking Bicycling and Walking Changes in the U.S.
This paper describes how bicycle and pedestrian programs in the United States have developed to the point where a measure of progress is necessary. Unlike other bicycling and walking assessment tools that rely on the opinions of individuals, Thunderhead’s Benchmarking Project is the only one that adheres strictly to government data sets that are uniform across all 50 states. This is also the first project to compare bicycling and walking data with underserved populations (age, immigrants, income) and health (obesity, diabetes) to show a total picture of the effects of the built environment on U.S. citizens. Ongoing, biennial updates of the report will showcase improvements and alert areas that may have slipped. The Thunderhead Alliance is the only national coalition of state and local bicycle and pedestrian advocacy organizations, currently 119 in 48 states. Thunderhead works with our member organizations to increase their effectiveness through trainings, replicable models and other resources so that they can work with their government agencies to improve the bicycling and walking environment.
