Efficiency of Fly Ash in Mitigating Alkali-Silica Reaction Based on Chemical Composition
This article discusses possible refinements to fly ash requirements, which the authors see as being too conservative. Data were used from previous research studies to assess the effectiveness of fly ash in preventing alkali-silica reaction (ASR), based on chemical composition. The authors then derived a chemical index designed to characterize the fly ash and cement, based on their chemical constituents. The authors' results noted that the index coordinated well with ASTM C 618 and CSA A3001 classifications. The index was also used to assess the efficiency of ashes that met neither specification.
